25 July 2018 | Introduction of Tropical Biology Field Course
The School of Life Sciences has recently introduced a Tropical Biology Field Course offered to all final year single honours and major route biology students. This not only expands the internationalisation strategy of the School, but gives students valuable biological and generic skills and training.
The course is held in association with the School of Biological Sciences, University of Sains, Malaysia and is based primarily in Penang.
During the 19 day course students are exposed to a range of habitats including tropical rain forests, mangrove swamps, tropical marine and freshwater systems. In addition, the course has a high emphasis on conservation and sustainability with studies on turtle conservation, orangutan sanctuaries, as well as accessing the impact of palm oil production and aquaculture, and how local communities are managing progress whilst sustaining their unique tropical environment.
