Biography

Dr. Zhong Fan joined Keele University as a Professor and Academic Director of SEND in Feb. 2017. Before that, he was Chief Research Fellow with Toshiba Research Europe, Bristol, U.K., leading research on IoT, smart grid, data analytics, and 5G communications. Earlier in his career, he was a Research Fellow with Cambridge University, a Lecturer with Birmingham University, and a Researcher with Marconi Laboratories, Cambridge. He also received a BT Short-Term Fellowship for his work at BT Laboratories. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tsinghua University, China, and the Ph.D. degree from Durham University, U.K. His research interests are smart energy, fog networks, IoT, and machine learning applications.

Research and scholarship

My research interests are IoT, smart energy, smart city, wireless networks, and data analytics. I am currently leading the SEND (Smart Energy Network Demonstrator) Project at Keele which aims to create Europe’s first ‘at scale’ Smart Energy Network Demonstrator on Keele campus – a living laboratory where new energy-efficient smart technologies can be researched, developed and tested in a real world environment. For this project we have secured 15M GBP funding from ERDF and UK government. We are currently working with Siemens to build the infrastructure as well as setting up 26 research projects with local SMEs. 

We are currently recruiting a number of PhD researchers on IoT, data analytics and smart energy with very generous salary!
