The Children’s Nursing programme has at its centre the child and young person and their family The aim of the programme is to develop Children’s nurses who are inquisitive, clinically astute, intelligently adaptable, and able to respond to the current and future needs of children and young people.
Our Children’s Nursing degree adopts an innovative curriculum model integrating theory and practice elements, which upon successful completion; contribute to admission to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Professional Register.
A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used throughout the programme and self-directed study is encouraged to promote independent learning and the development of lifelong learning skills. The development of clinical skills is an integral part of the programme and is supported in practice placements by qualified mentors and in the excellent clinical skills laboratories by experienced lecturers.
The programme also encompasses and innovative assessment strategy and student support is taken seriously with each student being allocated a personal tutor and having access to a variety of academic and pastoral advice services. Alongside these services a peer mentoring system is employed in order to support you through the Children’s Nursing degree.
For the 2018 entry, the BSc Children's Nursing course at Keele comprises one compulsary 120 credit module each year.

UK / EU entry requirements
Application Process: Application is via UCAS. The UCAS application is scored. Subject to initial scoring you may be invited to interview after which a decision is made in regards to offers.
GCSE requirements: Applicants will normally be required to hold at least five GCSEs, at grade C or above including: Mathematics and English Language. From 2017, for applicants taking reformed GCSE qualifications in England, we will consider the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a grade C.
Please note that we do not accept equivalent qualifications for Mathematics and English Language, and no longer accept Level 2 Key Skills/Functional Skills.
GCSEs can be pending when the application is submitted.
English Requirements: If English is not your first language, normally applicants will have IELTS level 7.0 (with 7.0 in each subset). The University may be able to accept alternative English Language qualifications from applicants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) on a case by case basis in line with the appropriate Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines.

Vocational qualifications: NVQ or equivalent qualifications are not accepted.
Academic entry criteria
GCSE requirements (as above) plus higher level qualification at or above NQF Level 3 (A Level) are required.
Normally evidence of study at Level 3 or higher within the last five years is required.

One science subject is required (Higher or Standard level – Biology preferred)

Applicants are also required to hold 2 A Levels at a minimum of grades BC.
Access to Higher Education programme
At least 45 Credits at Level three.
At least fifteen (15) level three credits at distinction and thirty
(30) level three credits at merit.

Further entry requirements
Candidates who are successful at the initial stage of selection will be required to satisfy Occupational Health clearances and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.
The University follows the DBS Code of Practice in these issues (See: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosureandbarringservice) and can provide a copy of the Code on request.
A reference for the applicant will be completed on the UCAS form by the referee. This is normally from an academic tutor. For applicants invited for interview, a second reference may be required. Friends, relatives or neighbours are not eligible to act as referees. All offers are subject to satisfactory references.
Candidates must also provide evidence of minimum residency requirements and meet English language requirements.
All candidates for pre-registration Nursing and Midwifery programmes are required to meet or exceed NMC requirements, including literacy and numeracy skills.
Applicants' qualifications that are not listed in the table above will be considered on an individual basis.
The School will also consider applicants who hold a relevant Degree, Higher National Diploma or other health related higher education qualifications.
International entry requirements

Placements for the Children’s Nursing degree have been developed to reflect the reality of the journey children and young people experience when receiving healthcare.
Placements will be undertaken within the acute hospital children’s setting and in a variety of community areas, which may include Children’s centres, schools and with the children’s community teams. All of which will help you prepare for a career within Children’s Nursing.
