Sustainability at Keele

We are living through a climate emergency. At Keele we're leading the sector in sustainability, not just in our ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2030 but also through our teaching and our groundbreaking research into climate change and renewable technologies.

Sustainability Institution of the Year At Keele we're committed to sustainability, root and branch. Since 1990, we’ve trebled our student population and significantly expanded our campus - whilst simultaneously decreasing our total CO2 emissions. And over the last six years, we've invested over £1.2m into carbon reduction - and will be investing more every year.

We're proud to be one of the first UK universities to declare a ‘climate emergency’, as well as having ambitious targets to be carbon neutral by 2030. Our Climate Action Framework Principles, launched in 2021, outline our whole University approach to tackling the climate crisis.

We're truly sector-leading in environmental education, and have world-leading research in environmental sustainability. With Keele having all the elements of a small town, our campus acts as a ‘living laboratory’ for groundbreaking projects.

Our commitment has meant that for the fourth consecutive year we have been placed among the Top 40 universities in the world for sustainability (UI Green Metric World Rankings, 2020), in addition to being named Global Sustainability Institution of the Year (International Green Gown Awards, 2021) and Clean Energy Scheme Award winners for our leading Smart Energy Network Demonstrator (Green Energy Awards, 2023)

We’re turning our campus into Europe’s first living laboratory, where new energy-efficient technologies can be researched, developed and tested in a real world environment.

At Keele we're committed to making sustainability a key part of our student experience.
