Civil engineering addresses the world’s most pressing infrastructure challenges: safe and reliable water supplies, climate-resilient cities, sustainable transport networks, renewable energy systems, and the preservation of our built and natural environments. Combining science, creativity, and problem-solving, Civil Engineers design, construct, and maintain the systems and structures that underpin society. Every project offers the chance to improve lives and contribute to a sustainable, resilient future.
This programme is designed to support your development as a professional engineer. You’ll begin with Engineering Fundamentals, gaining the scientific and technical knowledge to tackle complex problems. Alongside this, Engineering Skills will strengthen your practical ability through labs, workshops, and training in communication and project management. Engineering Simulation and Mathematics will then help you apply advanced analysis and modelling techniques, allowing you to understand and present engineering concepts with precision.
Specialist civil engineering study begins with structural analysis, soil mechanics, and fluid mechanics, alongside early exploration of sustainability and digital engineering methods. As you progress, you will learn to address complex applications, including system performance, construction technology, and modelling with building information modelling (BIM) and geographic information systems (GIS). In your final year, you will integrate your knowledge to tackle sustainability and circular economy challenges, explore innovations in structural health monitoring, smart infrastructure, flood and coastal resilience, and low-carbon construction materials, while developing leadership, teamwork, communication, and research skills through an individual research dissertation and a collaborative industry-led design project.

Build the foundations of engineering by discovering how mechanics, materials, and energy principles shape the world around us. This hands-on module blends theory with practical experience, testing structures, analysing materials, building electrical circuits, and fabricating components. You’ll master the fundamentals of static systems and develop the technical and reporting skills needed to succeed across engineering fields.
Fundamental Mathematics for Engineers
You will be introduced to essential mathematical concepts and techniques to engineering to help develop your confidence in applying algebra, trigonometry, calculus, matrices, and vectors to solve real-world engineering problems. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience with computational tools like Python, enhancing your skills in mathematical analysis and problem-solving for modern engineering challenges.
Fundamental Concepts in Engineering Science: Dynamic Systems I
Explore how motion, energy, and materials interact in real-world engineering systems. This hands-on module covers fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, material behaviour, and both analogue and digital electronics. You’ll investigate heat transfer, fluid flow, material deformation, and electronic circuits through structured laboratory experiments, computational modelling, and workshop fabrication. By combining theory with practical skills, you’ll develop the ability to analyse, design, and communicate engineering solutions, building a strong foundation for advanced study and professional practice.
Coding and Computational Design for Engineers
Programming and algorithmic thinking are essential for engineering problem solving. We will help develop your practical skills in using modern computational platforms such as Python, MATLAB, and Jupyter to model and analyse engineering systems effectively. You will also gain a solid understanding of numerical methods and visualisation techniques essential for modern engineering applications.
Professional Practice in Civil Engineering
Here, we introduce you to civil engineering practice, combining practical skills, core scientific principles, and professional development. We will cover laboratory techniques, design and prototyping, and CAD, alongside an exploration of civil engineering industries, sustainability, and professional ethics. Build your expertise in advanced static and steady-state engineering applied to complex and real-world components and devices. You will study the influences of combined mechanical and thermal loading, fracture mechanics, composite materials, and steady-state heat transfer, alongside introductory mechatronics. Further Mathematics for Engineers

Topics include differential equations, Laplace and Fourier transforms, probability, statistics, numerical integration, and vector calculus, all applied to real engineering contexts such as fluid flow, electromagnetics, and system modelling. Using MATLAB and Python, you will implement these methods to solve practical problems, gaining both analytical expertise and computational proficiency. This module equips you with the mathematical and digital tools essential for tackling complex engineering challenges.

Through cross-disciplinary projects, you will apply concepts to real-world challenges in infrastructure, mechatronics, and process optimisation. Extended Professional Practice in Civil Engineering
You will develop practical and theoretical skills in civil engineering, focusing on modern construction, prefabrication, and manufacturing processes. The module covers process design, quality systems, automation, and supply chain management, with emphasis on sustainability and Industry 4.0 technologies such as digital twins and predictive maintenance. You will apply engineering design principles using CAE and BIM tools, explore materials, structures, and geotechnical systems, and engage in collaborative projects. Devising Sustainable Engineering Processes and Products
We will develop your expertise in designing sustainable engineering processes and products. You will study renewable energy technologies, energy storage systems, advanced functional materials, and their integration into transport, domestic, and industrial applications. Through research-led learning and practical modelling, you will perform decarbonisation assessments, analyse life-cycle impacts, and evaluate emerging innovations to equip you with the technical, analytical, and communication skills needed for leadership in sustainability-focussed engineering.
Remote Geomatics and Environmental Engineering for Sustainable Infrastructure
We will explore how to plan, assess, and manage low-carbon, climate-resilient infrastructure using geomatics and environmental engineering. You will learn to apply UAVs, LiDAR, GIS, and satellite imagery for renewable energy site mapping, flood risk analysis, and land use monitoring. We will also cover water, wastewater, and solid waste management, alongside Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for sustainable projects. Through lectures, workshops, and field-based exercises, you’ll gain hands-on experience integrating geomatics with environmental engineering to deliver real-world low-carbon solutions.
Individual Research Project
You will tackle a real-world engineering challenge within your chosen specialism, developing your ability to define research objectives and plan projects independently. You will review existing literature, apply experimental, computational, or analytical methods, and gather and interpret data critically. You will also undertake laboratory and fieldwork, developing practical and technical skills. Finally, you will communicate your findings effectively through a professional report and oral presentation, preparing you for advanced study or a career in engineering.
Integrated Design Project
You will explore interdisciplinary engineering by integrating mechanical, civil, electrical, and chemical principles to solve real-world challenges, from renewable energy systems to disaster relief shelters. You will develop professional skills in teamwork, leadership, and communication while applying project management, sustainability assessment, and technical design. You will work on collaborative projects, gaining hands-on experience and confidence to deliver impactful engineering solutions that make a real difference for communities and industries worldwide.
Being a Civil Engineer
Take your civil engineering skills to the next level with this module, which integrates Ethics, Sustainability, and Regulation, Employability Skills, and Advanced Civil Engineering Practice. You will explore professional ethics, regulatory frameworks, intellectual property, climate resilience, and compliance with UK, EU, and international standards. Develop employability through portfolio creation, CV refinement, and career strategy, while applying advanced technical skills in infrastructure systems, structural and geotechnical design, digital engineering, risk management, and sustainable construction. Tuition fees for 2026/27 academic year
- UK: Fees for the 2026/27 academic year are subject to Parliamentary approval and have not yet been confirmed.
- International: Band 1, £18,200 for the 2026/27 academic year

Course content
Our Foundation Year allows you to develop your critical thinking, academic reading, writing, and communication study skills along with subject-specific knowledge and skills which will be invaluable in your academic studies and beyond. Upon meeting the progression criteria and successfully completing our Foundation Year, you will automatically progress into your Keele undergraduate degree with the confidence that you have the skills, and knowledge needed to successfully complete your course.
This Foundation Year is a two-semester programme that provides a tailored pre-degree programme of study to better prepare you for the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree.

We also offer a January start for some of our Foundation Year courses. Adopting a blended learning approach, the January start is particularly useful for students wishing to return to education following time out of studying, or who are seeking a flexible approach to their Foundation Year studies. Our January start is available across most of our Science, Humanities, Social Science, Health and Business courses.
Whilst still being a full-time course, our blended delivery model combines live teaching sessions - both online and on-campus - with self-directed study, enabling you to predominantly study at a time that suits your lifestyle. You will benefit from weekly online taught sessions which encourage you to engage with your teachers and peers.
In addition to online study there will be a series of full study days that you will be required to attend throughout each semester. These sessions may include lab-based activities, group work, review of course and assessment materials studied online. They will emphasise opportunities for you to deepen your knowledge and understanding of your chosen route.

The modules that you will take on a January start Foundation Year will be similar to those for the September start, but on a compressed timescale and tailored to a blended learning approach (with the majority of learning taking place online).
