Geoscience and Earth Systems

Geoscience and Earth Systems investigates the physical processes that shape the Earth and drive environmental change across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Research strengths include volcanology, geomorphology, sedimentology, geophysics, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, structural geology and geospatial analysis. Our researchers study volcanic hazards, landscape evolution, climate archives, coastal systems, carbon cycling, hydrothermal systems, seismic processes and environmental change recorded in geological records. Advanced surveying, remote sensing, geocomputing and geophysical techniques are used to improve understanding of how Earth systems have responded to past environmental change and how they may respond to future climatic and societal pressures. This work contributes directly to challenges associated with climate change, environmental resilience and natural hazard management.
