Accreditation of Prior Learning

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is a process which enables people of all ages and backgrounds to receive recognition and formal credit for learning acquired in the past through formal study and through work and other life experiences.

The term APL encompasses both Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), definitions are offered in the definitions section of the Policy (see link below).

Keele University recognised three circumstances under which a claim for APL may be made, they are as follows:

  • Admission onto a programme
  • Admission onto a programme with advanced standing
  • Module exemption
