Stimpson_Ian

I was appointed as a lecturer in geophysics and geology at Keele in 1987. My first degree was in geology at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College and I then went on to study earthquake source mechanics at University College Cardiff for my Ph.D. Before arriving at Keele I did some postdoctoral work setting up a seismic network in Brazil and computer modelling sandstone deposition based in Cardiff as well as analysing the French underground nuclear test in Algeria for the Atomic Weapons Establishment, Blacknest.

Class Fieldwork in Pembrokeshire Although I have worked with a variety of geophysical techniques, my main specialism is seismology, the study of earthquakes. As a member of the Applied and Environmental Geophysics Research Group, part of the Research Centre for Geography, Geology and the Environment, as well as studying local Staffordshire earthquakes, I've looked at microearthquakes caused by tunnelling, saltmine collapse and oil extraction. I've also studied vibration of wind turbines. I'm also working in geoconservation and have recently co-authored a geotrail to the Churnet Valley. I have a strong interest in teaching and learning and am currently studying for a part-time masters degree.
