Life Sciences research

Our research strategy is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), reflecting our commitment to addressing major global challenges in health, society and the environment. Research in the School of Life Sciences spans the spectrum from fundamental discovery science to applied and translational research, generating new knowledge and solutions that benefit people, communities and ecosystems. Our research is organised around seven interdisciplinary themes: Bioengineering and Health Technologies; Ecology, Biodiversity and Conservation; Environment, Place and Rural Systems; Geoscience and Earth Systems; Infectious Diseases; Molecular and Cellular Systems in Health and Disease; and Neuroscience and Neurology. These themes bring together researchers from across the School and beyond, fostering collaboration across disciplines and with national and international partners. The School is home to a state-of-the-art Insectary and hosts the Centre for Applied Entomology, Parasites and Pathogens (CAEPP), the Centre for Science and Technology in Medicine, and the Sustainable Rural Futures (SURF) Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships Programme, providing world-class facilities, expertise and training opportunities that support our research community.
