Passport Requirements for Travel to USA (both business and personal)

You may well be aware of recent news articles and the change in rules regarding travelling to the USA and the requirement to have an e-passport (also referred to as a biometric passport or digital passport) or you will be turned away.

If you are planning to travel on any Keele business or in fact any personal travel to the US on a UK passport,

WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT You MUST have an e-passport following a new rule introduced by the Department of Homeland Security on 1st April 2016.

This is also relevant if you hold a passport of a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), see link below.

https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program-requirements which details the countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP)

If you are looking to travel to the USA and have a UK passport that was issued between May and October 2006, you will either have to get a new passport or apply for a Tourism & Visitor Visa. Those with passports of countries that do not participate in the VWP should also apply for a Tourism & Visitor visa. To do so please visit https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/tourism-visitor/how-to-apply/

All UK passports issued after 26th October 2006 will be e-passports and therefore fine to use for travel. Passport holders of other countries should check with their relevant embassies.

Please note that all those entering the USA under the VWP must also apply for an ESTA prior to travelling (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation).

For further information please go to:

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements which details the VWP in more detail

https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ which is the link to apply for an ESTA

Please ensure that all Keele staff and students within your area are aware of this.

If you have any further queries, please contact your travel agent or airline directly.
