What is Clearing?

You may have heard the word ‘Clearing’ be used as part of the University application process. But what is University Clearing? UCAS Clearing is a key part of the university application process in the UK, helping students secure a place on courses with available spaces after the main application window has closed.

Clearing isn’t just for students who haven’t met the grade requirements of a conditional offer. It’s also an excellent option for those in a variety of situations, including:

  • Changing your mind about your course of study or institution
  • Missing the application deadline
  • Exceeding your expectations and wanting to switch to a different course or university

Whatever your reason, Clearing can help you find the right university course for you.

How Clearing works

Clearing typically opens in July and runs through to September. During this time, you can contact universities or higher education providers to check if they have spaces on available courses.

Once you’ve received your exam results, you can use the UCAS search tool to see which universities have Clearing vacancies.

Clearing vacancies and entry requirements

At Keele, all our Clearing vacancies and entry requirements will be listed on our website for easy access.

You can contact and receive offers from as many universities as you like during Clearing. However, you can only accept one offer

Who can apply through Clearing?

Clearing is open to anyone who has applied through UCAS but does not hold any offers. Once Clearing opens, you can log in to your UCAS Hub to see if Clearing is available for you. If you haven’t applied to university yet, you’ll need to complete a Clearing application and follow the steps provided by UCAS.
