Stop 8

point-08 red oaks outside Huxley

In front of the Huxley Building is a row of three Red Oaks Quercus rubra.

It is the largest and fastest growing of the American Oaks. In this group the acorns remain on the tree for one season and the ripen in the second year.

In autumn the leaves turn deep red to brown.

This group was planted in memory of Mr Compton the former owner of Mandley and Unett (distinguished bookseller, artist's supplier and stationery shop. And also an independent book publisher that used to be in Newcastle), by his wife.
