Keele graduates win top national bioscience awards at Parliament ceremony
Graduates from Keele University have been recognised on a national stage after winning top honours at a prestigious bioscience awards ceremony held at the Houses of Parliament.
Madeline Baker, a BSc Biochemistry and Neuroscience student, and Callum Richards, who studied MSci Biochemistry, were both presented with the Royal Society of Biology’s (RSB) highly regarded Top Project Award. The accolade celebrates the outstanding quality of their final-year research and highlights how students like Madeline and Callum are shaping the future of biology.
The pair attended the ceremony alongside Dr Nawroz Kareem, Senior Lecturer in Biosciences and Bioveterinary Programme Director, representing Keele University among leading bioscience educators and professionals from across the country.
The awards ceremony also marked a significant milestone for Keele’s School of Life Sciences, with 12 undergraduate programmes newly awarded RSB accreditation and a further 12 achieving advanced accreditation.
Dr Kareem said: "I warmly congratulate both students on receiving the Royal Society of Biology Top Project Award. This national recognition reflects the excellence, originality and academic rigour of their work, and showcases the strength of teaching and research within Keele's School of Life Sciences. It is a remarkable achievement that places their projects among the very best undergraduate work in the UK.
"These successes speak to Keele's growing reputation as a leading provider of bioscience education, with student achievement firmly at its core. They also highlight the dedication of our staff and students, and reinforce the university’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, research-informed bioscience education."
The event featured contributions from senior figures across academia and industry, including Richard Reece, Chair of the RSB Accreditation Committee, and Doug Brown, Chief Executive of the RSB. The Viscount Stansgate Dr Stephen Benn, a Keele alumnus and the society's former director of parliamentary affairs, also delivered a speech, in which he highlighted the strength and impact of Keele's academic community.
