Picture of Katie

I think it’s really valuable and unique to be at a university that is so well connected with local businesses. I remember coming into lectures and seeing all of the offices of local businesses around KBS and it definitely made entering the world of work feel a lot more accessible and a lot more fluid. It didn’t feel like such a jump from being a student then being an employee. The biggest thing I would say that I took from Keele, is the people that I’d met throughout my journey, the level of support I’ve received from people and the cheering on that I’ve had from people and the belief that people have had in me.

I feel like I’ve grown both personally and professionally. It can be a bit of a culture shock, the change from university straight into employment, so by having this placement year I feel like I have been gradually eased into a professional environment. If you are thinking about doing a placement year, I’d say 100% go for it. You will thank yourself later, at the end of the year when you’ve completely developed as a person and you feel so prepared to take on that graduate jobs market.

Work experience

Gaining work experience helps you build essential skills and gain real insight into the career areas that interest you, boosting your employability when you graduate. It also gives you the chance to develop valuable networks and connections that can support your future career. At Keele Business School, you’ll benefit from strong industry partnerships, hands-on practical opportunities, and access to a work placement*

*Students who require a visa to study in the UK may be able to add in a work placement depending upon the programme. The ability to add a work placement is dependent upon the UK Immigration rules at the time of the request. It may be that for some programmes students will not have the option to request a placement period to be added to their programme before they arrive in the UK and would need to apply for a new visa. There is no guarantee that a placement will be provided and that students who have a visa are subject to a number of restrictions on the type of work, including placements they can undertake.
