FYO-00197 - Foundations of Life Sciences
Foundations of Life Sciences (15 credits)
What determines whether an animal is a starfish or a bird? How can we meet the demands of a growing human population while safeguarding biodiversity? In this module, you will learn the key principles that underpin studies in the life sciences. You will see how the great variety of life on earth arises from the same basic building blocks, and how these interact to produce living organisms. We examine how organisms obtain the necessary raw materials and energy to grow and develop on an earth with finite resources and how they interact with one another and a changing environment. We will examine how human activities contribute to these environmental changes and evaluate our responses to them. You will learn how to manipulate biological material and gather and evaluate both qualitative and quantitative data. The module will give anyone pursuing a degree in the life sciences a firm foundation for further study.
