FYO-00386 - Foundations in Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Foundations in Ecosystems and Biodiversity (30 credits)
This module will prepare you to progress to degree programmes in zoology, ecology, geography, environmental science or geology. Assuming a varied knowledge base and providing a platform for more detailed study in semester two, at the end of this module you will be able to explain both the operation, interconnectedness and outcomes of a number of natural systems taking place underground and on the Earth’s surface, within the Earth’s (deep time) past, present and future. You will also be able to identify and explain the biotic and abiotic elements of ecosystems, with and without anthropogenic activity. No day will ever be the same again as the world around you is revealed in its animal, vegetable and mineral diversity and dynamism. The module incorporates mathematical and practical skills alongside theoretical frameworks and systems, providing opportunities for you to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to the observation and assessment of processes in an outdoor laboratory.
