Advancing Humanities (30 credits)
The Victorian Period is one of the most compelling in the history of England largely because it was a time of unprecedented transformation and nowhere was this more apparent than on the city streets. Three of the best known recorders of urban street life from this time period are Engels, Dickens and Mayhew. Therefore, using extracts from some of their works (written at the time), we aim to explore the social conditions of the time and to consider the work of key individuals in the area of social reform. We will then focus more specifically on the city of London and ask how Victorian England compares to present day in terms of diversity, wealth and inclusion.
In this module, we take a chronological and thematic approach to life in urban Victorian Britain and consider the work of key reformers and campaigners of the time.
