National Year of Reading: Staff Favourites - Matt
As you may already be aware, 2026 is the National Year of Reading!
The National Year of Reading is a UK-wide campaign designed to help more people rediscover the joy of reading. As a library, it only felt right to celebrate by asking some of our lovely staff to share their favourite books or magazines and why they love them.
Matt, who works at the Health Library, has chosen the whole Hunger Game Series by Suzanne Collins as his favourite. He explains:
“I couldn’t choose between the books within The Hunger Games series; so, I have to say the entire series. I don’t usually read fiction, preferring to read non-fiction philosophical texts, but the Hunger Games series is something I have always returned to; given the themes of the books. I love this book series, because Suzanne Collins shows that through solidarity liberty can ultimately triumph over authoritarianism. It doesn’t matter what your role is in the struggle, what position/job someone has, victory can be achieved. To quote a YouTuber, as well as a known meme – ‘And remember kids, the next time that somebody tells you, "The government wouldn't do that," oh yes they would.’ ”
