Local and community history month - local history
Did you know that May is Local and Community History Month?
The aim of the month is to increase awareness of local history, promote history in general to the local community and encourage all members of the community to participate.
To celebrate Local and Community History Month, we’re highlighting some titles from our Local Collection:
‘Missuses and mouldrunners: an oral history of women pottery-workers at work and at home’ by Jacqueline Sarsby, which documents women’s working and domestic lives in the North Staffordshire pottery industry from the First World War to the 1980s,
‘The miners of Staffordshire’ edited by John Benson, an exploration of coal mining and community life in Staffordshire, published by the Centre for Local History at Keele University,
‘The pottery trade and North Staffordshire 1660-1760' by Lorna Weatherill, which examines pottery production and trade in North Staffordshire in the century before industrialisation,
‘Off the Record: A People’s History of Keele’ compiled by Angela Drakakis-Smith, comprising interviews with members of the Keele community on a hundred years of local life, and
‘When I was a Child’ by Charles Shaw, a working-class autobiography of child labour and family life in the Potteries in the nineteenth century.
Our Local Collection is devoted to the history of the local area and comprises around 6,000 books, pamphlets, journals and directories. For more information, please see our website or contact special.collections@keele.ac.uk.
