International experts gather at Keele for conference to help domestic violence victims

Experts from across the world gathered at Keele Hall recently for a conference to help support women and girls affected by domestic violence.
The event, coordinated by Dr Ching-Yu Huang, Dr Jane Krishnadas, and Professor June Keeling, saw experts from the UK, Taiwan, Canada, India, Australia, convene to discuss the multiple challenges in helping domestic violence victims, and tackle the ‘triple discrimination’ (personal, social and systematic) experienced by minoritised and marginalised victims of domestic violence.
The group of 20 international experts from fields including Psychology, Women’s Health and Family Law - as well as Government and non-government organisations - came together to discuss and co-create innovative ways to tackle this complex issue and the specialised supports needed by minoritised victims.
Following the conference, the experts are now writing research papers and briefs for practitioners to inform field experts and policy makers.
Dr Ching-Yu Huang, from Keele’s School of Psychology, said: “We created a space for international experts for an honest discussion, unpacking complex issues about violence, gender, ethnicity and culture, as well as what works and what doesn’t. It was inspiring to learn from these different professional and perspectives, which is needed for multidisciplinary collaboration.”
This conference was the final of a series of three events funded by Keele’s QR Policy Support Fund, showcasing Keele’s commitment in tackling gender-based violence, racial discrimination and the intersectionalit
