Keele students donate 6,000 meals to local food bank
Students at Keele University have generously donated 2.5 tonnes of food and household goods to the Newcastle-Staffs food bank as part of the 2019 Great Donate scheme.
The food that Keele students donated this year equates to an estimated 5,800 meals for members of the local community, and in the six years that this scheme has been running Keele students have donated approximately 10 tonnes of food in total equating to 23,200 meals.
Newcastle’s local food bank is part of The Trussell Trust’s network working to tackle food poverty and hunger in the UK. Food banks provide a minimum of three days’ emergency food and support to people in poverty or those in need.
The Great Donate initiative is a scheme at Keele whereby students donate usable goods such as non-perishable food and household items that they don’t wish to take with them when they move out of halls of residence.
