Applying to SURF

Applications to SURF are now OPEN for Doctoral Scholars who will begin their studies in September 2026. On this page, you will find information about how to apply, the application forms, and link to the application portal for both our supervisor-defined Current Calls and student let projects.

SURF Leverhulme doctoral scholars research the contemporary challenges faced by UK rural communities. Proposed projects must meet the SURF principles of ‘more-than-human’ and ‘community-led’, and align with at least two SURF themes: Landscape, Land Use, Lifestyle and Livelihood.

Applicants are encouraged to consider applications under our list of supervisor-defined Current Calls, but may also propose their own project. All applicants must submit the relevant completed application form (see below). Applications that do not use the relevant form will be rejected. Please note that student-led projects are only available to UK-domiciled students.

Prospective applicants must contact potential supervisors for their chosen area of interest to receive advice for this call. Relevant supervisors are listed on the Current Calls page. For student-led projects lease see the SURF People pages, and/or contact surf@keele.ac.uk for more information.

All applications must be made via Keele’s Leverhulme Studentship Route, accessible via the ‘apply here’ link below.
