Additional costs

At Keele, we are committed to providing an outstanding student experience. While your tuition fees cover the core elements of your studies, you may encounter additional costs that vary depending on the nature of your chosen course.

We’ve outlined the main areas here to help you plan and make the most of your time with us. It is important that this document is read in conjunction with the Programme Specifications. For the Veterinary Medicine and Surgery course please see ‘Course related costs’ section on the Vet School website.

  • Course Materials: You may need to budget for items such as textbooks, stationery, and printing costs for assignments or projects. Whilst all students can access our extensive library collections, you might prefer to purchase personal copies of essential textbooks, especially those you’ll reference frequently throughout your studies.
  • DBS Checks: For some courses enhanced DBS checks are essential for placements and practice and may require additional fees. The Programme Specificationc will provide clear guidance on these requirements for your chosen course.  As a guide, currently (at time of writing 01/05/2025) an ‘Enhanced’ DBS check with a digital ID check is £60.70. For those students on courses that have a mandatory enhanced DBS check, registration to the DBS Update Service is also required. This is currently £16 per year. If the DBS Update Service is not completed within the specified timeframe, students will be liable for another Enhanced DBS check at their expense. It should be noted that this price is likely to increase year on year.
  • Police Checks (International students only): For those courses that require a DBS check a Police Check will also be required from your country of domicile. This check may incur a cost.

  • Field Trips and Placements: Some modules involve fieldwork or placements, which can lead to travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs. These experiences are designed to deepen your learning and are often unique to each course, so costs can vary accordingly. Where there are compulsory modules, the University normally provides significant financial support. It should be noted that students are responsible for their own subsistence and field gear. For more information, please refer to the Programme Specification.
  • Graduation: We encourage all students to celebrate their achievements. While participating in graduation ceremonies is optional, you may wish to consider costs related to gown hire, photography, and guest tickets.
  • Professional Memberships: For some courses, professional registration or membership is required, which may incur a cost. Please see the relevant Programme Specification for more details.
  • Specialist Equipment and Uniforms: Certain courses, particularly those with practical or clinical components, may require specific clothing, uniforms, or specialist equipment to support your learning. The Programme Specification will provide clear guidance on these requirements for your chosen course.
  • Travel to Placement (for Health Courses with Compulsory placements):  Students are responsible for reasonable costs incurred in travelling to local placements and making travel arrangements - in the same way as for travel to and from the University generally. However, students are able to apply for the NHS Learning Support Fund to support travel to and from placement locations (eligibility criteria apply). Students may also be eligible for support towards expenses through NHS Learning Support Fund Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses application. Please see the relevant Programme Specification for more details.
  • Vaccinations (for Health Courses with Compulsory placements): Various vacccinations must be completed before you undertake your first placement. These are required to protect you, your family and your patients from infections and/or diseases that you may be exposed to whilst working as a student health professional. Obtaining these vaccinations and evidence of their completion is your responsibility and may be completed by your GP who will charge for these services. Please see the relevant Programme Specification for more details.
