In this Q&A, Geography graduate Georgia talks about life after Keele, securing her first graduate job and her top tips for students preparing to take their first steps into the world of work.
What are your plans after graduation?
I have already secured and started my role as a junior consultant at RAS Limited, working on projects relating to safety and environmental risk management for clients in chemical, energy and aviation sectors. I am responsible for extracting data from specialist software, technical report writing, generating GIS maps, scribing at hazard studies and interpreting industry legislation.
How did you find your graduate job?
I undertook 2 placements as part of my degree, first a 3-week placement in year 2 with Croda in Leek in their health, safety and environment department where I looked at general site safety on a chemical site and conducted an audit into firefighting foams in line with current legislation. That placement led to me meeting various people within the site including maintenance, engineering and quality, and ultimately one of the members of engineering staff suggested that I contact RAS about a placement.
What has your Keele experience been like?
My time at Keele has been great because it gave me loads of real-world experience, not just classroom learning. The fieldwork in the Lake District was a highlight and helped bring what we learned to life, as well as visits to the renewable energy park and smart energy network demonstrator. The lecturers were also passionate about their subjects and always happy to help when I needed guidance.
How did Keele help you secure your graduate role/prepare you for the world of work?
Keele had plenty of opportunities for work placements, and great support from the placement support team. I completed the employability in the workplace module in 2nd year, allowing me to prepare for the workplace, undertake a placement and then reflect on it.
Any advice for students who are looking for their first graduate roles?
Be proactive and ask for opportunities – take that into everything you do. Use feedback as a tool, seek feedback often and use it!
