Course structure
On this pathway, you will study four compulsory core modules (120 credits), in addition to choosing to undertake either a traditional Dissertation or Placement (60 credits). The placement provides an excellent opportunity to help you improve a particular aspect of professional practice, teaching delivery or administration, providing opportunities for observations and collaborating with an on-site mentor.
Recognition of Prior Learning
- If you already hold a postgraduate qualification in Education, you may be considered for Recognition of Prior Learning, which could contribute to your overall degree credits.
- Each application will need to be discussed on an individual basis and then reviewed by the University.
- More information and details can be found on our Recognition of Prior Learning application process webpages.
Modules
The module details given below are indicative, they are intended to provide you with an idea of the range of subjects that are taught to our current students. The modules that will be available for you to study in future years are prone to change as we regularly review our teaching to ensure that it is up-to-date and informed by the latest research and teaching methods, as well as student voice. The information presented is therefore not intended to be construed and/or relied upon as a definitive list of the modules available in any given year.
Compulsory core modules
Global and Inclusive Education Issues
This module explores the changing world of education in the context of social, political, economic and cultural globalisation. You will learn about how globally inclusive education has been positioned and promoted as a positive reaction to segregated schooling, inequality and prejudice. It reflects on the 'nature' of international identity, both for teachers and students, and critically explores what 'international' means, educationally, in this context. This module offers insights into many different aspects of inclusive education within a global policy discourse.
Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies in Social Science
Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies offers a comprehensive introduction to key research methods in the social sciences. You will explore the theoretical foundations, strengths, and limitations of each approach, gaining hands-on experience with data collection, analysis, and interpretation techniques. Sessions cover survey design, statistical analysis, interviews, focus groups, and thematic coding. Emphasis is placed on integrating methodological approaches to address complex social phenomena, enabling you to develop the skills necessary for conducting robust, rigorous research in diverse social science contexts.
Certificate in TESOL Part A
This module provides the key foundations of English language teaching leading to the Trinity College (London) Certificate in TESOL (on payment of the agreed Trinity College (London) moderation fee). The module includes an introduction to the structure of the English language. It also introduces you to the principal methodologies and techniques such as classroom management and lesson planning, as well as practical skills such as giving instructions and board work. You will have the opportunity to experience learning an unknown language, as well as plan and deliver language classes. Asynchronous resources are provided online for additional self-study of teaching skills, pronunciation and language awareness.
Certificate in TESOL Part B
This is the second module leading to the Trinity College (London) Certificate in TESOL (on payment of the agreed Trinity College (London) moderation fee) and the main focus is on preparing students for the moderation visit by a Trinity assessor. You are encouraged to use your creativity to develop and evaluate various types of learning materials including audio-visual sources and how to develop a syllabus. At the same time you will continue to develop practical skills through teaching asylum seekers and groups of visiting international students. Throughout the module we discuss career development and how you can find work both in the UK and overseas. Asynchronous resources are provided online for additional self-study of teaching skills, pronunciation and language awareness.
Optional modules
You will choose one of the following optional modules.
Dissertation
The dissertation module provides students the opportunity to carry out and write up an original piece of research at Masters level. Students will draw on the knowledge they developed in the Research Methods module, as well as knowledge and skills gained in other modules, to conduct their research. The project could be empirical, ‘text-based’ or a combination of both approaches. Candidates will design and undertake their project in close collaboration with their supervisor and submit a 15,000-18,000 word dissertation upon completion.
Placement
This module offers an educational work-based professional experience through a three-month placement in either primary or secondary school. During the placement, students will observe practitioners in the education workplace. They will work with their assigned school-based mentor to identify educational topics that their placement school would like them to research and plan the scope and nature of research evidence that will need to be collected to research these topics. The students will subsequently develop and conduct a small research project on a topic chosen by their placement school, following the 'Spiral of Enquiry' methodology.

Professional qualifications and work experience
The majority of our courses will consider relevant work experience and/or professional qualifications at the appropriate level, as an alternative to an undergraduate degree for entry.
