An Introduction to Physics and Astrophysics at Keele
In this session there will be a talk introducing the Physics and Astrophysics degree programmes at Keele. This will be followed by a short-narrated video tour of the undergraduate physics laboratories at Keele and the Keele Observatory. After this, there will be an opportunity to take part in an interactive experiment involving the measurement of magnetic fields using your phone, which is similar to one performed recently by our current first year students. This will be followed by a time for questions and answers, which will conclude the session. The interactive experiment will make use of the app, phyphox, which can be downloaded from https://phyphox.org/

An Introduction to Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry at Keele
This session will give you information on what makes the Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry courses at Keele unique, and will show some of the equipment that we have available for you to use. You will get the opportunity to see some of our academics, and ask any burning questions that you may have.

An Introduction to Forensic Science
This session will give you the opportunity to explore our crime scene house facility and learn how we recover, enhance and analyse forensic evidence. You will have the opportunity to chat with staff to give you a further understanding of what being a Forensic Science student at Keele involves.
Anyone registered for the event holding an offer including Forensic Science will receive a fingerprinting kit through the post, take a look at what's included. Kits will be sent via Royal Mail, we will endeavour to get these to you in time for the session but this may not always be possible.

Meet the Staff from the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences
This session is aimed at parents and carers of applicants holding an offer in Astrophysics, Chemistry, Forensic Science and Physics. In this session you can chat to staff from these subjects to explore what being a student in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences involves, including subject content, research in those disciplines and the student support available.

Monitoring and simulating natural phenomena: when AI is inspired and informed by nature
Observing and simulating some important natural phenomena has led to some of the most powerful AI/machine learning tools in use today. In this talk I'll draw on segments of lecture materials that I've delivered at Levels 4, 5 and 6 of the current Computer Science BSc course and include some software simulations to help illustrate a few important points. Along the way, we will see how far reaching the impact of some of these developments have been: from contributing to some of the UN's sustainability development goals, to advancing some of the UK's sector-leading AI applications.

Machine Representation of an Apple
This session will briefly take the you through an understanding of how humans have evolved to represent semantic concepts of objects in the real world (for instance, that of an apple), and will provide an introduction to machine learning through historic examples.

Chaos and the butterfly effect
Much of mathematics is concerned with predicting the future. Be it the spread of a virus, the ebb and flow of the stock market or the complex weather patterns above your head, an understanding of predictability is a fundamental problem in the mathematical sciences. In this session we will demonstrate, together, on a scientific calculator, that even the simplest of mathematical models can exhibit an inherent unpredictability in the form of “chaos”. The patterns emerging from this behaviour can be quite beautiful! This also connects to a number of interesting areas of cutting edge research taking place at Keele.

An Introduction to the Keele  Environment Programmes
Hosted by teaching and research-active staff from within the environment team, this one-hour session will explore a range of engaging topics. This session will provide you with an invaluable insight into what it is like to study an environment programme at Keele.
To begin, Dr. Ian Oliver will deliver a mini session that examines sustainability issues linked to hydropower schemes, covering: fish barriers, flooding & hydro-peaking, carbon emissions, landslides and earthquakes, and human displacement.
We will also introduce you to our 600-acre campus and discuss how we use this fantastic resource in our teaching Towards the end of the session, you are invited to ask our panel of staff any questions you may have regarding the environmental programmes.

An Introduction to Geography at Keele
Join us for an information-packed one-hour session where we will provide a virtual introduction to our beautiful campus and discuss how we use this living-lab within our teaching.
You will then join Dr. Deirdre McKay, and Dr. Antonia law, who will deliver a taster lecture that looks at the social and cultural work plastic does. We will then consider the ongoing impacts of rapid climate change on the landscapes of the Arctic and their wider implications for global society as a whole.
Finally, we will conclude with a Q&A session. This will provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the course.

Discover Geology at Keele
From volcanoes to tsunamis, this one-hour taster session will delve into the popular topic of natural hazards. We’ll be exploring their causes, characteristics, and the destructive impact they have on human society through mini-lectures and explosive experiments! The sessions will be hosted by teaching and research-active staff.
1) Taster lecture on Tsunamis to be delivered by Dr Ian Stimpson. Contrasting the 2004 Indonesian and 2011 Japanese tsunamis, we will look at this major geological hazard and how its impacts can potentially be mitigated.
2) Volcanology Rocks Taster Session delivered by Dr Adam Jeffery and Dr Stuart Egan. A series of experiments are presented that provide insights into the inner workings or volcanoes, and why they erupt in so many amazingly different ways.
You may also wish to use this session to ask our staff questions you may have about our geology programmes. 

What If? The Role of Imagination in Science
In this session, we will explore how imagining differently might help us solve some of the world’s most difficult problems. The session will start with a discussion between Rob Stannard and Adam Moolna, course leaders for Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, and some of their students, responding to the short TedTalk 'From What Is to What If'. A walk through a day in 2030, by Rob Hopkins, which imagines what the world might be like if we solved some its most pressing problems concerning sustainability, the environment, education, food, and work, just some of the topics explored in Keele University’s Grand Challenges lecture series which form part of the core curriculum for Natural Sciences.
We will show how tutors and students work together to explore topics and themes, we will explore what imagination and creativity are and why they are so important in problem solving, and how an education in Natural Sciences might help develop creative and critical thinkers.

Fake News and Media Literacy
After offering an overview of the distinctive Media degrees at Keele, and their combination of media analysis and creative media practice, we will engage in a taster session that highlights the importance of developing high-level skills in media literacy: focusing on the rise of fake news. With almost half of UK adults using social media to access news, concerns have - understandably - been raised about these platforms being used to spread misinformation and even outright lies. In this session we explore some of the dynamics of how 'fake news' is spread and some of the dangers that this label creates.

Creating with Sound – From Musique Concrète to Electronic Dance Music
Giving a historical overview of music technology developments since the beginnings in 1950s, featuring the first electroacoustic compositions for tape, analog sound synthesis, music for instruments and electronics, development of interactive music, sonic arts, as well as the developments of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). Both the technology and aesthetics will be discussed and the presentation will include audio examples.
