Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
The Language Centre offers the Trinity College (London) certificate in TESOL to Keele students as part of the elective choices. This is one of the most widely recognised initial TESOL qualifications and is accepted by the British Council and also by schools and employers worldwide.
Gaining the Trinity CertTESOL is like having a passport to work and travel almost anywhere in the world. Recruiters worldwide often request either this qualification or its Cambridge equivalent (CELTA) as a minimum. Summer schools in the UK provide seasonal work and usually pay premium rates for a teacher with a Trinity CertTESOL.
What will you do when you graduate? What will you do during the summer?
- Does working in a creative, rewarding environment appeal to you?
- Would you like to gain a professional teaching qualification?
- Would you like to develop skills that you can use in any career?
- Does developing skills, which enhance your c.v. and give you an edge in the jobs market, appeal to you?
This programme is composed of three modules leading to the Trinity College (London) Certificate in TESOL which means that you will get an additional, internationally recognised teaching qualification as well as your Keele degree.
It's a lot of fun - you don't need to speak a foreign language and you get to experience something that your other modules can’t offer!
Keele has been running this programme for over twenty years and our graduates have used this qualification to work in countries all over the world including Japan, Thailand, Italy, China, Brazil, Korea, Spain, and more.
You will need to take one module per year for three years to reach the level required by Trinity College (London) to apply for moderation.
First year: ENL-10053 Certificate in TESOL Part 1 (15 credits)
Second year: ENL-20007 Certificate in TESOL Part 2 (15 credits)
Third year: ENL-30009 Certificate in TESOL Part 3 (15 credits)
Classes for these modules are 2 hours per week across semesters 1 and 2. Attendance is mandatory to satisfy Trinity College (London) CertTESOL requirements. Additionally, you will need to attend other sessions such as tutorials to prepare, conduct and receive feedback on teaching practicals, observations of experienced teachers, sessions on learning an unknown foreign language, etc.
If taken as undergraduate options there are no additional charges for tuition, just the Trinity College moderation fee (approximately £175) to pay at the end of module 3. Trainees will have the opportunity to carry out teaching practicals in sessions for overseas students at Keele University or refugees and asylum seekers at a local charity. There may also be the chance for you to visit one of our partner universities to carry out some of your teaching practice overseas.
