Keele second only to Oxford for Medicine

Keele University’s medicine degree programme has been ranked second in England in the Guardian University Guide 2020, behind only Oxford and ahead of Cambridge.

Medicine at Keele also ranked No.1 in the UK for student satisfaction with the course, receiving a near-perfect 99% score, and also for satisfaction with teaching which has a score of 96.7%.

Overall, Keele climbed to 32nd place in the table, the University’s highest ever ranking, and has also seen three other subjects achieve UK Top 10 status:

  • Politics (including International Relations - 4th)

  • Nursing & Midwifery (6th)

  • Pharmacy & Pharmacology (10th)

Professor Andrew Hassell, Head of the School of Medicine, said: “We are delighted with our position in the Guardian guide. We have been very pleased with our students' response to curricular developments that we've made, including our expanded final year student assistantships with enhanced learning in acute care. We aim for our course to be a partnership between students, faculty, local healthcare providers and, most importantly, our patients. Our placements providers in primary and secondary care play a huge role in our students' experience; I am glad to say that the Trusts and GPs who receive and teach our students have been enthusiastic partners in enabling our student to develop into excellent clinicians.

“We and our students recognise our responsibilities to the local community which has embraced the School of Medicine. Patients are extraordinarily generous in giving time to our students. In turn, our students endeavour to reciprocate. They engage with many organisations in the voluntary sector, and several medical student societies, including the Teddy Bear Hospital, First Responders and the Anthony Nolan Trust, have considerable involvement with the community.

We have a dedicated staff at the School of Medicine, academic, professional and technical support staff. We are proud of our performance in league tables but recognise the importance of sustaining our efforts if we are to continue to graduate excellent clinicians committed to high quality patient care.”
