Frequently asked questions

We understand that you'll have lots of questions before you start your course at Keele. Hopefully, lots of your questions will be answered here, but you can also get in touch with our Student Services team for any further queries.

Before you begin

Take a look at our Countdown to Welcome web pages and complete all the steps.

You may also want to take a look at the reading lists for your course (your School will tell you more about these), and familiarise yourself with the Keele App and Microsoft Teams.

If you haven't arranged your accommodation yet, please get in touch with our Accommodation team as soon as possible to discuss your options. You can contact the team at accommodation@keele.ac.uk.

If you'll be living on campus, you'll find lots of useful information about what will be provided and what you should bring with you on the Accommodation section of our Welcome web pages. You may want to create a checklist and tick items when you’ve packed them - and don’t forget your Accommodation Key Collection Pass, which you’ll receive at the end of your online accommodation induction.

If you find that you’re unable to arrive at Keele on your pre-arranged date, please contact the Accommodation team to let them know. You may also need to submit a notification of short-term absence on the Keele attendance app (which you'll find on the Keele App), if you'll be absent from in-person lab sessions or seminars.

To ensure you get off to the best possible start at Keele, we've designed a pre-arrival induction programme called Keele Essentials which will introduce you to new content and digital tools in preparation for your course at the University.

There are several stages to work through, and each stage has a self-test at the end to allow you to check your knowledge on key points. Don't worry; this is for you to see how you're doing and for us to see your progress through the module. You can retake the tests as many times as you need to.

Once you've completed all the stages you'll be able to see that you've passed in the KLE Gradebook and in My Keele Journey, which is also where your Academic Mentor will monitor your completion.

So... where to start?

If you've not already watched it, we have an introduction video at https://www.keele.ac.uk/induction. Follow the instructions in the video and then head over to the KLE to get started on the pre-arrival stages within your Keele Essentials course.

During the Welcome period

There will be a range of activities for you to get involved with, designed to help you settle in and meet new people. There will be something for everyone, so you’ll be spoilt for choice! Details of activities happening throughout the year can be found in the Keele App 'What's On' section.

You'll also attend induction classes for your degree programme, and these will be shown on your academic timetable once they are confirmed.

All events, both virtual and in-person, will be shown in the Keele App - download the app and take a look at the ‘What’s On’ calendar. If you don't have a smart phone or tablet which you can download the app onto, don't worry, it's also available in a web browser either on your personal computer or on one of our on-campus PCs - just go to app.keele.ac.uk!

Find out more about the Keele App and what it's used for.

It’s natural to feel nervous if you don’t know anyone else on your course, but you'll be in the same situation as most other new students and there are lots of opportunities to connect with people before and after you arrive. Additionally, you could join one of Keele SU’s many clubs and societies.

During your studies

This will depend on your degree course and the modules that you pick. You can contact your academic School for more information, or look at the contact hours for specific modules.

Our Student Services team provides a wide range of services to students including:

  • Student Experience and Support, based in your School/Faculty
  • Student Financial Support
  • Residence Life
  • Disability, Support and Inclusion
  • Counselling and Mental Health Support

Find out more about the support available to students at Keele.

Students can also access free independent support from Advice and Support at Keele (ASK) in the Students' Union.

Keele Practice is a health centre on campus which provides NHS services. If you'll be living on campus, you should register with Keele Practice before you start your course as part of the enrolment process to ensure that you'll be able to see a doctor or nurse if you fall ill.

If you're not happy with your room allocation, please speak to our Accommodation team in the first instance. You can request a room move, however please be aware that there will be a waiting list for room moves at the start of term.

The majority of students living on campus will not be eligible for a parking permit unless there are exceptional circumstances, such as course placement requirements, medical or disability requirements, or primary caring responsibilities. If you're an off-campus or commuting student you'll be able to apply for a parking permit. Parking permits are allocated on a needs-based application process to ensure that students with the greatest need can park on campus. There is also pay and display parking available on campus for students not eligible for a permit.

Find out more about student parking permits.

Make sure you give your friends and family the correct room address so that they can send you letters and parcels to help you settle in. Your address should be in the format: name, room number, block number, hall of residence and postcode:

  • Barnes ST5 5DZ
  • Holly Cross ST5 5JB
  • Horwood ST5 5DY
  • Lindsay ST5 5DX
  • The Oaks ST5 5JD

Your post will be delivered to the post room on campus and you'll need to take ID with you to collect it.

Student finance and money

It can take at least a week for your first payment to be received in your bank account after you've completed enrolment, provided that your Student Finance application has been fully processed and approved, therefore it's important to make sure you have sufficient money available for the first couple of weeks. If your student finance is delayed or you have any other concerns, you could contact your Student Finance authority directly or speak to our Student Financial Support team.

You should apply for Student Finance as soon as possible. It can take some weeks for Student Finance applications to be processed, so you should try to ensure that you have enough savings in place to cover your living costs until your application is processed and you receive your first payment.

For more information about bursaries and scholarships, please visit the money and finance section of our Welcome web pages and our main Bursaries and Scholarships web pages for undergraduates and postgraduates.

Our Financial Support team has pulled together a bank of information, tips and tricks to help you find out more about student living costs and get the most of your money while you're studying. Please check out our student living costs page to learn how to start a budget plan, how to stay on track, and how you can reduce your living costs while still having a great time at Keele.

There are lots of job opportunities available for students, both on campus and in the local area, which you could fit around your studies. Find out more about our Careers & Employability service and job opportunities on our web pages.

If you have a question that's not been answered above, please get in touch with our Student Services team and we'll be happy to help you.
