Receptions

The Idea

It would be nice to reintroduce receptions/receptionists back - to make the campus more welcoming

Why This Idea Should Be Considered

Since the receptions were abolished, the campus has lost human touch. Visitors often feel lost, do not feel welcomed, there is no one to ask a question or direction. For internal users it would be nice to have a point of contact who knows what is going on in the department - news, projects, staff changes, etc.

How We Would Implement This Idea

What Success Would Look Like

Reintroducing receptionists at the Keele campus would significantly enhance the overall campus experience by creating a warm and professional first impression. For example, visitors and new students would immediately have a clear point of contact, helping them feel welcomed and supported from the moment they arrive. This can also benefit students’ mental health; for example, having a friendly, visible person to approach can reduce anxiety, especially for those who are new, overwhelmed, or unsure where to go.

Receptionists would also improve navigation around campus; for example, they could quickly direct someone to the correct building or department, reducing confusion and delays. This would benefit staff as well—for example, by reducing interruptions from routine enquiries, allowing them to focus on their core responsibilities. In addition, reception staff could strengthen security; for example, by monitoring access, managing visitor sign-ins, and acting as a visible deterrent. Overall, this would contribute to a safer, more organised, and supportive environment for everyone.
