The Idea

This proposal outlines the introduction of a Personalised Student Development Package designed so that every student receives an assessment prior to, or immediately upon, their arrival at Keele. This assessment will identify individual strengths, needs, and aspirations, enabling each student to access a tailored programme of support from a wide range of services.

All students will be able to engage with personalised interventions such as professional coaching, mental health coaching, academic skills development, careers guidance, digital skills development, counselling, pastoral support, experiential learning, and volunteering opportunities. The aim is to ensure that every student receives the right support at the right time, focused on developing the skills and confidence they need for their future careers.

This differs from the current provision that relies on students to be able to navigate Keele’s structures and systems to find the support that is right for them. This removes this complexity and provides a structured path using an assessment and/or AI to understand their goals and needs, followed by a personalised coaching approach, to help curate their journey and meet their goals .Not only will this support a ‘first time right’ approach (finding the right advice and support from day one, rather than being referred from colleague to colleague/service to service), but it will also support time efficiency gains for staff.

To make this programme accessible and equitable, protected time should be built into the curriculum. This ensures that students with additional commitments—such as employment, caring responsibilities, or commute barriers—can participate fully. Where elements cannot be embedded into timetabled activity, flexible alternatives (e.g., early evening sessions or online options) should be offered.

This initiative will be delivered with rigour, including clear measures of impact to track student development, engagement, and outcomes. It will be supported by a strong and distinctive marketing campaign that positions Keele as a sector leader in personalised, student centred education—demonstrating our commitment to putting every student first.

This is a commitment to recognising our students as a diverse group and we want to support them in the way that's right for them and support them to be successful in the way they want to be. This is not a token gesture in how we talk and market the services and support we already offer, but a way of putting students first and adapting what we do around them.

Why This Idea Should Be Considered

So that Keele can offer a unique study opportunity and be truly sector leading in putting student development and success first

How We Would Implement This Idea

Development of assessment tool, utilising AI, dedicated support packages overseen by a coaching team

What Success Would Look Like

  • Increase in student recruitment
  • Positive student feedback
  • Positive impact on student outcomes (progression, continuation, completion)
