Biography

Dr Ehsan Baniasadi is a Lecturer in Engineering at Keele University and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with extensive academic and industrial experience in mechanical engineering, energy systems and low-carbon technologies. His research focuses on hydrogen production and storage, renewable and hybrid energy systems, industrial decarbonisation, thermal energy management, waste-heat recovery, and data-driven modelling and digital twins for net-zero applications.

Before joining Keele, he held academic and research positions at Aston University and the University of Isfahan, where he served as Associate Professor, Vice Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies, and Head of the Energy Research Institute. He has published several peer-reviewed journal papers in leading international journals and has contributed to numerous UK and international research projects and industrial collaborations. Dr Baniasadi is also a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA) and has extensive experience in teaching, postgraduate supervision, research leadership, peer review and engagement with industry.

Research and scholarship

Dr Baniasadi’s research and scholarship focus on sustainable and low-carbon energy systems, with particular expertise in hydrogen production and storage, renewable and hybrid energy technologies, thermal energy management, industrial decarbonisation, waste-heat recovery, and digital-twin approaches for energy applications. His work combines thermodynamic, techno-economic, exergy, life-cycle and computational modelling methods with experimental and industry-led research to address challenges in net-zero energy transition. He has led and contributed to UK and international research projects supported by EPSRC IAA, Horizon 2020, TÜBİTAK, REEF-UKC and institutional impact funding, and has worked extensively with industrial partners in energy-intensive sectors including steelmaking, natural gas, refrigeration and heat recovery. His research has resulted in more than 65 peer-reviewed journal publications, patents and book chapters, alongside extensive postgraduate supervision, international collaboration and editorial and peer-review activity for leading journals in energy and mechanical engineering.

Teaching

Dr Baniasadi will be co-leading the delivery of EGN-10001, Fundamental Concepts in Engineering Science: Static Systems, supporting students in developing a strong foundation in engineering mechanics and the fundamental principles required for further study in mechanical and related engineering disciplines.

Publications

Supervision

Dr Baniasadi has supervised and mentored more than 20 postgraduate researchers in mechanical engineering, energy systems, hydrogen technologies and renewable energy. His supervision focuses on developing independent research skills, rigorous engineering analysis, high-quality academic outputs and the practical relevance of research.

Collaborations and grants awards

Dr Baniasadi has developed an extensive network of national and international collaborations across academia and industry in the areas of hydrogen, renewable energy, thermal systems, digital twins and industrial decarbonisation. His collaborative research has involved partners in the UK, Canada, Spain, Germany and Turkey, as well as engagement with industrial organisations in energy-intensive sectors. He has secured and contributed to research and impact funding from schemes including the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account, REEF-UKC, Horizon 2020 SFERA-III, TÜBİTAK, Erasmus+, Brunel University and institutional impact funds. Recent awards have supported projects on AI-assisted digital twins for solar-powered refrigerated transport, renewable-energy-driven cooling, green hydrogen applications and energy-efficiency solutions for industry.
