[Statement originally published 8 Sept, updated 12 Sept 2022]

It is with deep sorrow that we hear about the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Our sadness at this time is shared by the entire Keele community and people across Staffordshire, the country, and the world, as we remember the lifetime of service given by Her Majesty.

On behalf of our staff, students, and alumni of Keele, I extend our deepest condolences to the Royal Family and we wish them strength during this sad period.

We were honoured that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Keele in 1999, and many staff look back fondly at the visit.

As a mark of respect, the Union Flag will fly at half-mast over Keele Hall and will continue to do so until the day of Her Majesty’s funeral.

There will be a Service of Remembrance in the Chapel this Friday for members of the campus community, and you can find more information about this below.

We have an established protocol and plan in place for this sad event, which has been informed by guidance from Universities UK and the Cabinet Office.

As next Monday is a bank holiday, there is important information below about our operations that day, along with answers to any FAQs.

With best wishes at this sad time,

Professor Trevor McMillan OBE
Vice-Chancellor
