Keele professor appointed to Food Standards Agency’s Scientific Council
A Keele Pro-Vice Chancellor has been appointed as a scientific advisor to the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA).
Professor Jonathan Wastling, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean of Keele’s Faculty of Natural Sciences is one of three new leading experts to have been appointed to the FSA’s Scientific Council, which informs the organisation’s strategies and policies.
The Science Council and Scientific Advisory Committees, supported by smaller Joint Expert Groups, provide independent expert advice and challenge on the FSA’s science strategy and policies, ensuring that decisions are based on the most up-to-date science and evidence available.
Professor Wastling said: “It is a privilege to be asked to join the Science Council at this time as the UK seeks to shape new policies around the future of food and when our vulnerabilities in food security have recently been so exposed.”
Professor Guy Poppy, Chief Scientific Adviser at the FSA, added: “Our Scientific Advisory Committees play a key role in ensuring food safety and standards are informed by the best science available, to help tackle the challenges of today and address emerging risks for the future.
