Biography
I have been Professor of Health Services Research at the Centre since 2000, having worked previously in the Centre of Health Planning and Management (1989-2000). I was a Non-executive Director in NHS between 1993 and 2010, serving the last eight years as a Primary Care Trust Chair.
Research and scholarship
I am a social scientist with a particular interest in patient experiences of chronic illness and chronic pain; multi-morbidity; self-management; implementation research; mixed methods; health policy. I lead a team of social scientists who all carry out qualitative research linked to epidemiological surveys and trials. We also conduct discrete sociological studies, for example, on wellness and resilience in older people.
Teaching
I contribute to the undergraduate medical degree; Masters in Medical Sciences and supervise PhD dissertations.

I am a member of the National Clinical Audit Advisory Group.
