Biography
Nadia joined the Primary Care Centre Versus Arthritis in August 2009 as a Research Assistant in Systematic Reviews, having previously held an appointment as Research Officer at the Centre of Ageing and Mental Health at Staffordshire University.
Originally qualifying as a Zoologist (BSc Zoology, Cardiff 1989; PhD Zoology, Aberdeen 1994), she subsequently held a number of post-doctoral fellow positions as a field-based researcher studying a variety of mammals including bats and chimpanzees.
Nadia’s interest in health grew whilst working in Africa and led her to study for an MA in overseas development (Manchester University, 2002) with particular emphasis on the health implications of forced mass displacement.
Research and scholarship
Nadia’s research interests are broad and include mental health, musculoskeletal conditions, alternative and complementary therapies, prognosis, and systematic review methodology.
Over the last 10 years she has worked closely with Versus Arthritis’s Clinical Studies Groups (now reconfigured as Research Advisory Groups) to support their work by providing regular evidence reviews and horizon scans of current trials and patents.
Currently involved in systematic reviews for a number of funded projects:
- Back-UP a European collaboration to develop a new health care platform with a prognostic model to support more effective and efficient management of neck and low back pain (Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission)
- The BLAST OFF (Bisphosphonate aLternAtive regimenS for the prevenTion of Osteoporotic Fragility Fractures) Study (NIHR HTA)
- Supported self-management for all with musculoskeletal pain: an inclusive approach to intervention development (EASIER) (Versus Arthritis)
- Patient outcomes, healthcare resource use, acceptability and feasibility of triage, self-referral and direct access services for patients with musculoskeletal pain (NIHR School for Primary Care Research)
- Treatment recommendations for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis – update (Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis [GRAPPA])
Teaching
- Supervision of PhD students
- Systematic review programme (Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences)
- Literature searching (School of Medicine, Year 3 SSC (Student Selected Component)
- Literature searching and initial quality assessment (School of Medicine, Year 1 Scholarship Week)
Further information
Nadia is also a qualified Medical Herbalist (University of East London, 2012) and a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH).
