The collection of Thomas Pape (1872-1970) which came to Keele in the mid-1960s is of special interest to historians of Staffordshire. Pape was a schoolmaster holding posts in Newcastle-under-Lyme at the Middle School, the Orme Boys School and Wolstanton Grammar School from 1907 until his retirement in 1933.
He devoted a great deal of his time to historical and archaeological research, studying especially Newcastle-under-Lyme and surrounding areas, and was the author of several books and numerous articles. He was elected a member of the North Staffordshire Field Club in 1917 and served as the president in 1931. During his researches he amassed a significant quantity of material (approximately 500 items) relating to North Staffordshire in the form of manuscripts, printed works, photographs, slides, newspaper cuttings, maps and plans. Pape's research notes and correspondence with fellow historians are also preserved.
The material is owned by Keele, is listed, and there are no restrictions on access.
