Local and community history month - poetry
Did you know that May is Local and Community History Month?
The aim of the month is to increase awareness of local history, promote history in general to the local community and encourage all members of the community to participate.
To celebrate Local and Community History Month, we’re highlighting some poetry books from the Library's Local Collection:
'Oscar the Pike and other Potteries poems' by Nicholas Ferenczy, a writer and artist from Alsager who has published several collections of poems,
'City Works dept.' by Philip Hancock, an award-winning poet from Newchapel, Stoke-on-Trent,
'Dandelions: Poems' by Arthur Berry, a leading 20th century artist of the Potteries who was born in Smallthorne,
'Potters: a division of labour' and 'Where the Trent rises' by John Lancaster, which focuses on life, labour and politics in the Potteries, and
'Chalk' and 'Chaze' by Nick Degg, the 2025 Stoke-on-Trent Poet Laureate, whose work is rooted in everyday life and childhood memories.
Our Local Collection is devoted to the history of the local area and comprises around 6,000 books, pamphlets, journals and directories. For more information, please see our website or contact special.collections@keele.ac.uk.
