Library Resource Spotlight: Referencing and reference management
As it’s the start of a new year and learning how to reference is always tricky, let us introduce our referencing and reference management resources!
The library subscribes to Cite Them Right and RefWorks to help you construct and manage your references.
Cite Them Right is ideal to help you construct references for standard resource types, such as books, ebooks, journals and journal articles, as well as less common resource types, such as UK statutes and social networking sites, like Facebook and Instagram. This tool also helps you to practise formatting your references in Havard, APA, Chicago and other common referencing styles, and you can also work through tutorials based on your preferred referencing format.
There’s also our interactive online module, Manage your references... in a Nutshell, that introduces you to the tools that you can use to manage your references, and our Creating references using Cite Them Right... in a Nutshell video shows you how you can use Cite Them Right to help you to reference properly in your assignments or research.
To sign into Cite Them Right, click login and select ‘Keele University’ from the institution list, and log in with your Keele username and password.
RefWorks is the ideal tool for managing an unlimited number of references as you can export references from all the library databases, including Library Search, EBSCO, ProQuest, and the Web of Science, and you can quickly create a bibliography from the references you import into your RefWorks library.
Our Getting Started with RefWorks sway provides step-by-step guidance on using RefWorks, whilst our Get More Out of RefWorks sway delves deeper into what RefWorks can do, such as creating references manually and removing duplicate references from a folder.
First time users for RefWorks will need to click ‘create account’ and use their Keele email address to register, before searching for ‘Keele University’ from the ‘Use login from my institution’ drop-down box. There you will see your empty RefWorks library.
Existing RefWorks users will need to go to the RefWorks log-in screen and either sign-in with their email address and password or set up single sign-on via institution. Single sign-on can be set up by searching for ‘Keele University’ from the ‘Use login from my institution’ drop-down box, before entering your Keele email address to receive an email from RefWorks support. This email will contain a link to reassociate your login with institutional sign-in and you should be able to use either sign-in method in the future.
The library also runs skill seminars on reference management, which you can book on by visiting our library events, and we have a Referencing and Paraphrasing Sources study guide that provides guidance on how to reference and paraphrase sources in your assignments. The Liaison Librarian for your subject areas can also help with referencing queries and you can find who your Liaison Librarian is by visiting our subject resource pages, plus there’s help and support on our reference management pages too.
