Library Resource Spotlight: Migration to New Worlds
Introducing Migration to New Worlds!
Migration to New Worlds is a multi-archive collection, which digitises unique primary source materials, such as letters, diaries, and government papers, to document the movement of people from Europe and Asia to the New World and Australasia from the ‘Century of Immigration’ to the modern era.
The collection’s unique primary sources cover various themes, including motives for emigration, ships and shipping lanes, politics, legislation and governance, and permanent settlement and successive generations, whilst the documents that are digitised in full colour include personal accounts, oral histories, legal papers, maps, and rare printed books.
Users can use the keyword search box to undertake a basic search, whilst the advanced search functionality can be used to filter their search results by date, document type, and themes. The search directories can be used by users to search by keywords, specific people, ports and places, as well as individual ships.
There’s also the explore functionality, which offers additional research tools and new ways to approach the material in the collection, whilst the galleries contain watercolours, ship plans, and visual images. Users can also listen to and watch audio and video interviews, explore the bibliographies of important figures, and access the New South Wales Convict database, which contains the details and particulars of convicts and former convicts in the colonies from 1780-1819.
Migration to New Worlds is also available on the library’s A-Z of online resources and there’s a handy help page too!
