Special Collections Spotlight: Arnold Bennett Papers
Introducing the Arnold Bennett Papers from our Special Collections and Archives!
Enoch Arnold Bennett, born in Hanley 1867, is famous for his chronicles of the Potteries towns. Many of his most popular literary works were inspired by the area and set in a fictionalised version of the local area. Bennett became assistant editor of Woman in 1894, after beginning a career as a solicitors’ clerk in London. His first novel, ‘A Man from the North’, was published in 1898 to critical acclaim.
Bennett was a prolific writer and one of the most financially successful British authors of his day. Between the 1890s and the 1930s, he wrote 34 novels, 7 volumes of short stories, 13 plays and even managed to keep a daily journal!
Our Special Collections and Archives has a special interest in collecting materials relating to Arnold Bennett. We hold numerous signed first editions, manuscript correspondence and literary papers, as well as papers of the Arnold Bennett Society.
