    School of Life Sciences

    We welcome students and staff to our friendly, open, and inclusive School and campus. In the School of Life Sciences we seek to understand our world – the earth and the people, plants, animals and microbes that inhabit it. How they co-exist, what happens when things go wrong and how we can fix it. You may choose to study fundamental biosciences such as biochemistry, biology, neuroscience and pharmacology, or focus on the health and disease of humans and animals on our biomedical science, bioveterinary science, bioengineering and microbiology and immunology courses, or you could learn more about environmental science including geology, ecology, biodiversity, and our impact on the world around us. Our mission is to ensure that our research-led courses prepare students for careers that address the most significant challenges facing society today.

    The results of the last REF showed that our research in the Centre for Life Sciences is having a genuine impact, with world-leading examples where society has benefited from our research.

    The David Attenborough Laboratories have significantly expanded the School of Life Sciences’ teaching and research areas, and provide two additional state-of-the-art teaching laboratories.

    Study with the School of Life Sciences

    Our students study in state of the art teaching laboratories. You can choose degree programmes from a range of core areas including biochemistry, biology, biomedical science and neuroscience. We are committed to equipping you with the skills and experience needed to tackle some of the world's biggest challenges. Our curriculum is research-led and focusses on the application of knowledge to solve complex problems. Our teaching is delivered in an environment that allows you to get hands on experience with equipment and methods. This includes a state-of -the-art Central Science Laboratories while our Living Lab includes a Renewable Energy site; forests and lakes over a 600-acre estate. Alongside campus-based learning, field courses form an important feature of each of our programmes. With us you will also have a wide range of employability, study abroad and research opportunities.

    Foundation Year

    Strengthen your scientific knowledge by studying a Foundation Year in core science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Geography, Geology and the Environment, Maths, Physics and Psychology. When you successfully complete this Foundation Year, you will be better prepared for your degree studies.

    Undergraduate study

    We are proud of the new state of the art facilities we have to offer and hope you will find working in the building an enjoyable experience.

    Postgraduate study

    For postgraduates, our rural campus community provides an environment that is focused, relevant and mature.

    Postgraduate research students are central to our learning community, and we can guarantee a warm welcoming community and campus life.

    Take a tour of the Huxley extension

    The fantastic new Huxley laboratories feature two teaching laboratories, capable of hosting 120 students and two additional state-of-the-art research laboratories and offices.
