Equality, diversity and inclusion
The School of Geography, Geology and the Environment has an active Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Self-Assessment Team and we’re fully committed to ensuring that our staff and students are working in a supportive environment and have equal opportunities. As a School, we have been awarded Athena SWAN awards (national awards recognising commitment to the advancement of women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) in higher education and research), for over 10 years, and we are working towards our Athena SWAN Silver Award. As an Institution, Keele University is committed to the principles of Athena SWAN, is a member of the Disability Confident scheme, the StoneWall Workplace Equality Index and Keele University was recently award a Bronze Race Equality Charter award
Geography, Geology and the Environment (GGE) Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Self-Assessment Team (EDISAT)
The GGE EDISAT comprises staff from across the School and aims to represent a balance in terms of gender, position and work/life experiences.
The remit of the GGE EDISAT is to:
- 1. Discuss and evaluate equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) issues arising in the School and plan actions to mitigate identified issues;
- 2. Monitor progress on the Athena SWAN Action Plan and develop additional actions;
- 3. Design, collect and analyse Athena SWAN data, discuss outcomes and potential causes and develop actions;
- 4. Discuss and action any other initiatives to generate awareness of EDI.
The EDISAT is co-chaired by Dr Alix Cage and Dr Ian Stimpson. The Head of School, the School Manager, the School Director of Education and the School Director of Research are all members of the EDISAT.

The Faculty Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Co-Chairs, Dr Sue Sherman and Dr Ray Amith, along with the University Athena SWAN Officer, Dr Hannah Barjat, also contribute to our GGE EDISAT.
We meet four times a year to discuss EDI issues in GGE and we link closely with the University in terms of: engagement with the Keele BAME Network; reporting directly to the University via membership on the Faculty of Natural Sciences EDISAT; and disseminating our work at the School Senior Management Meeting and the School Staff Meetings.
EDI Awareness across GGE:
We aim for our GGE Staff members, particularly our EDISAT members, to receive training in EDI issues so that we can better support our colleagues and students. Members of the EDISAT have received training in:
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Awareness
- LGBTI Ally Training
- Mental Health Awareness
- Sexual Violence Disclosure Training.
At times, our staff and students are away from Keele and in the field. All staff on fieldtrips currently receive physical First Aid Training, however, we are working towards all our fieldtrip leaders being trained in mental health awareness and sexual violence disclosure in the field so that we can make sure we are best prepared for any unforeseen and unusual incidences.
Contributing to GGE Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work and contacting the EDISAT:
The GGE EDISAT works to identify EDI issues arising in our School and plan actions to mitigate against them. We represent all of our staff and students, so if you wish to raise an EDI issue or have a query, please feel free to contact any member of our EDISAT and book an appointment or attend a drop-in clinic (details below). The EDISAT Co-chairs, Dr Alix Cage and Dr Ian Stimpson, have an open door policy and welcome contributions, suggestions and discussion regarding EDI issues.
If you wish to make an anonymous suggestion or comment, please either post a note through the suggestion box in the foyer of the William Smith Building or submit a comment through our on-line suggestion box[coming soon] .
GGE Resources:
- We have a gender-neutral toilet in the foyer of the William Smith Building.
- Please contact the School GeoOffice if you wish to access a private room for breast-feeding.
- Sanitary products are available in the School Office if you need them.
