Introducing our partnership
The Doctor of Public Health West Africa Transnational Education (TNE) programme brings together Keele University in the United Kingdom, the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana, and the West African Institute for Applied Health Research and Socio-economic development (WAFERs).
The professional doctorate is designed to combine academic learning, public health practice, and applied research. The programme draws on expertise across the participating institutions to prepare professionals to address complex health challenges and contribute to improvements in policy, services and population health across West Africa.
Founded in 1949, Keele University is a campus university in Staffordshire, England. Its founding vision connects specialist knowledge with an understanding of the social and political circumstances in which that knowledge is applied.
Keele’s teaching and research span medicine and health sciences, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. Its researchers address challenges including global health, neglected tropical diseases, food security and climate change, reflecting the University’s commitment to improving lives through education and research.
Through the DrPH partnership, Keele contributes to programme design, teaching and doctoral supervision, working with West African partners to connect academic expertise with regional public health priorities.
The University of Ibadan is Nigeria’s first university established in 1948, and is located in Ibadan, Oyo State. The university has grown from an institution offering programmes in arts, science and medicine into a comprehensive university covering a broad range of disciplines.
Its academic provision includes public health, clinical sciences, basic medical sciences, social sciences, and environmental disciplines, providing a multidisciplinary setting for education and research.
As a DrPH partner, the University of Ibadan contributes to teaching and doctoral supervision, supporting candidates to develop research informed by the realities of public health practice in Nigeria and the wider region.
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) was established in 2011 as a public university dedicated to health education, research and community service. The main campus and central administration are located in Sokode-Lokoe in the Ho Municipality (Volta Region), with a second campus in Hohoe.
UHAS combines professional education with practical learning and research. Its academic community includes the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health, and other schools and institutes addressing health and healthcare needs.
Within the DrPH partnership, UHAS contributes to programme delivery and doctoral supervision, bringing academic expertise and an understanding of public health priorities in Ghana and across West Africa.
WAFERs is a non-profit organisation dedicated to applied health research, training, capacity development, and knowledge mobilisation. Its multidisciplinary work addresses public health challenges through clinical, epidemiological, health systems, and implementation research, with a strong focus on translating evidence into meaningful improvements in policy, practice, and population health.
Through longstanding partnerships with communities, policymakers, research institutions, and regional networks, WAFERs bridges the gap between research and action, ensuring that scientific evidence is responsive to local priorities and informs real-world decision-making.
As a core partner in the DrPH programme, WAFERs plays a critical role in facilitating collaboration across academic and practice partners, supporting programme coordination, delivery, and stakeholder engagement. The Institute also provides programme administration, pastoral support, and capacity-strengthening opportunities that enable candidates to engage fully with their studies, professional development, and knowledge mobilisation activities.
