Biography

Rakesh studied pre-clinical medicine and BA in mechanisms of disease at the University of Cambridge. He graduated from clinical school at UCL in 2011 and undertook foundation training in UCLH and barnet hospitals. Rakesh undertook an Academic Clinical Fellowship in general practice as part of his training at the Royal Free Hospital VTS and then received a Msc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. During training he also completed the MRCP, DCH and DRCOG, achieving the medal for the highest scoring candidate. After practice in London he moved to Cambridgeshire where he is a salaried GP in a rural practice and leads on quality improvement and education.

Rakesh performed research in autism at the University of Cambridge, the psychological effects of plastic surgery at the Royal Free and international vaccine policy at UCL before his academic fellowship at UCL when he focussed on childhood infectious disease in developing countries. He has lectured, tutored and course-organised at UCL and the Royal Society of Medicine on pathology and public health. Rakesh ran international projects for the RCGP on their Junior International Committee. He has been awarded a number of grants, distinctions and prizes and has delivered over 20 international presentations and workshops.

Rakesh was awarded the Wellcome Trust Primary Care PhD fellowship in 2019 and is looking at how to implement atrial fibrillation (AF) screening as part of the SAFER trial. His will employ mixed methods to contribute to the process evaluation, specifically looking at GP practice factors that are barriers and facilitators to AF screening.
