Biography

Dr Hassan Awan is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Primary Care at Keele University with experience in engaging underserved communities in health research. Through his Wellcome-funded PhD, he explored emotional distress in South Asian men with long-term conditions. His work combines clinical practice as a GP in a diverse urban setting with academic expertise in co-producing research with communities traditionally excluded from health research. He has established and led ethnically-appropriate patient advisory groups, developed novel dissemination methods including co-created animations, and built lasting partnerships between healthcare services and marginalised communities. This experience in meaningful community engagement has directly informed his approach to developing culturally sensitive interventions in primary care mental health.
