International student JP shares their experience of settling into life at Keele University, offering advice on adapting to a new country, building friendships, managing student life, and making the most of the university experience.
Relocating to a different country for university is thrilling, yet it can initially be quite daunting. As an international student at Keele University, I’ve experienced this change myself, and there are some things I wish I had known sooner that would have made the process easier.
Firstly, allow yourself time to adapt. Everything is unfamiliar, from the climate to the way classes are taught. It’s common to feel unsettled at first, but that sensation fades. Keele offers a friendly community, and once you get comfortable, it begins to feel like home.
One of the best things you can do is get involved early on. Join clubs, participate in events, and chat with classmates during your lectures. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but most students are friendly and open to making new friends. Keele has a diverse student community, so you’ll meet people from all around the world, which makes it easier to build connections.
Academically, be ready for a different style of learning. In the UK, there is a strong emphasis on independent study. Lectures provide the basics, but it’s your responsibility to explore topics in more depth. Stay organised, keep track of your deadlines, and don’t hesitate to ask your lecturers for help if you’re unsure about anything.
Taking care of your wellbeing is crucial, especially when you’re away from home, which can be challenging during the initial weeks. Keep in regular contact with your family and friends, but also work on establishing your life here. Keele provides support services if you ever need assistance, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.
Another key piece of advice is to manage your finances carefully. Student life can be costly, so budgeting is essential. Plan your weekly expenses, take advantage of student discounts, and try to avoid unnecessary spending.
Lastly, make the most out of your time here. University isn’t just about academics; it’s also about personal growth, trying new activities, and making lasting memories. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone, explore the campus, and enjoy all that Keele has to offer.
Moving to Keele is a significant change, but it also presents a great opportunity. With the right attitude, it can become one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
