Starting karate at Keele University has been a transformative part of Gabriel’s student experience. Joining the Keele Karate Club allowed him to continue a lifelong passion for Shotokan karate while building confidence, discipline and friendships within a supportive university community.
Starting karate at Keele University has been one of the best decisions of my student experience. In the early stages of arriving at university, I was actively looking for a karate club where I could continue to practice my favourite childhood sport alongside meeting new people and staying active. That is when I discovered the Keele Karate Club, where traditional Shotokan karate is practiced. From my very first session, I was welcomed into a friendly and supportive environment that made me feel like I belonged, which made joining easy and enjoyable.
Shotokan karate is a traditional style that focuses on strong stances, powerful techniques and precision. Training each week has helped me improve both mentally and physically, building confidence, focus and resilience. Since joining, I have become fully immersed in the club and recently achieved one of my proudest milestones by grading to yellow belt. Reaching this stage showed me how rewarding consistent effort and determination can be.
One of the highlights of my karate journey so far has been attending the KDS (Karate-do Shotokai) Spring School. Over the course of a weekend, students from various KDS karate clubs at different universities came together to train, exchange skills and meet karateka from all over the country. It was intense but incredibly rewarding, offering new perspectives on technique and sparring while building a sense of community beyond Keele. In addition to the event, a massive dinner party was also held at one of the restaurants close-by which was well deserved after such intense training.
The opportunities don’t stop there. There are regular gradings, summer schools and courses held across the country, allowing students to continuously develop and refine their skills. Beyond training twice a week, the club also hosts frequent socials from picnics and club nights to laser tag and arts and crafts nights. These gatherings make it easy to form friendships and feel part of a close-knit group.
Karate at Keele isn’t just about learning self-defence; it's about building discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship while being part of a supportive community. It’s a space where you can grow, challenge yourself and meet genuinely friendly people along your journey.
