Research Project Summary

My research concerns how established political parties throughout Western Europe have attempted to curtail the rise of radical right niche parties with a particular focus on campaign strategies. To that end, I seek to map out the array of strategies adopted by political parties, why particular strategies are favoured, and the extent to which these strategies have been successful. From here, I will employ Qualitative Comparative Analysis to see if I can identify which strategies are the most appropriate given a particular set of conditions.

My research therefore employs an extensive analytical stage (QCA) that seeks to explore broad casual patterns of party competition, and an intensive secondary stage (case studies) to test the validity of the results.

My interests are broadly within the fields of political parties and elections in W. Europe, with a particular focus on radical right parties, party competition, British politics, and the British Conservative Party.
