The Lived Experience of Minoritized and Underrepresented Research Assistants in Arts and Humanities Research Projects – an Exploration of Systemic Opportunities and Challenges
This partipcipatory reserch project, led by Dr Manuella Blackburn and the Windsor Fellowship, investigated the lived experiences of minoritized and underrepresented research assistants (RAs) in UK Arts and Humanities research, with a focus on systemic barriers and enablers within academic environments.
Drawing on data from 196 expressions of interest and two co-created focus groups, the project identified key themes including workload pressures, limited access to training, inequities in recruitment, and the need for inclusive supervisory practices. The findings are informing the development of structured interview protocols and an AHRC funding application, with the aim of advancing equity, recognition, and career development pathways for RAs across the sector.
